Bishop Balthrop’s Voice in Gold — A Voice Like a Trumpet in Zion is a commemorative digital artwork created in loving memory of Bishop Willie L. Balthrop, Sr., D.D. The image presents him preaching from an open Bible, one hand raised with conviction, within an ornate gold-framed museum setting as five visitors stand in quiet reflection. Acts 2:28 appears at the pulpit, while the inscription beneath the portrait declares, “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet” — Isaiah 58:1, KJV. Created as a digitally rendered canvas-style tribute for museum-quality presentation and fine-art canvas reproduction, the work honors his ministry, his spiritual voice, and the enduring love of his family. A heavenly birthday tribute from his son, Anthony L. Balthrop, honoring a beloved father whose voice and memory remain close to his heart.

Curator statement

Bishop Balthrop’s Voice in Gold: A Voice Like a Trumpet in Zion was created in loving memory of Bishop Willie L. Balthrop, Sr., D.D., as both a personal tribute from his son and a visual remembrance of a life devoted to ministry. The central image presents Bishop Balthrop preaching from an open Bible, one hand lifted with conviction, within the visual language of a traditional painted canvas and an ornate gold-framed museum presentation. Acts 2:28 appears at the pulpit, while the inscription beneath the portrait draws upon Isaiah 58:1, KJV: “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet.” The surrounding museum environment transforms the portrait from a private remembrance into an invitation for public reflection, with visitors pausing before the work as witnesses to a legacy of faith, preaching, family, and service. This exhibition does not seek merely to preserve a likeness. It seeks to preserve the memory of a voice — a voice that proclaimed Scripture, shaped lives, strengthened family, and remains present in the hearts of those who heard it. Conceived as a digitally rendered commemorative artwork with the appearance and texture of fine-art canvas, the work is designed for both digital museum presentation and future museum-quality canvas reproduction. For me, this exhibition is also deeply personal: a heavenly birthday tribute to my father, offered with gratitude for the life he lived, the faith he carried, and the voice that remains close to my heart.
